You're Fired
Software is eating the world. AI will eat everything.
I don't buy it. I am excited for the next 3 decades to see how this plays out.
Your company needs to maximise profit. You get fired. Lots of people lose their jobs. Not just programmers but all sort of white collar jobs. Company has increased its income.
Now who are they going to sell their products to? Where are the customers? Since everybody is kind of poor now, who will pay for their AI super agent 007? The rich ones. What will the rich do with it? Will they produce new things? Who will they sell it to? What would they buy? I don't see the haves and haves not settling in different strata with different ecosystem. Wealth gap is a far bigger problem to them.
Surely there will still be scarcity. There are many things that are always in lack. Energy. Humour. Courage. Capital markets will find ingenious ways to allocate these resources. Where knowledge isn't the bottleneck, agency is. There is still future to be had. Space colonies. Flying cars. Robots. I am dreaming of the Jetsons future. Don't die.
There is the other scenario. There will be abundance. Cost of knowledge comes to zero. Everybody gets everything, only if the artificial super intelligence finds a net gain on keeping us around. Losing/Keeping/Getting a job would be the last of your concern. Maybe they will keep us around. Makes for a great story.
