Momentum - II
Okay. Here are the results.
Tuesday-11 hrs, Wednesday-10 hrs, Thursday-10 hrs, Friday-8.5 hrs, Saturday-9 hrs, Sunday-8.5 hrs Total = 57 hrs, Average= 9.5 hrs
Putting in the hours was not an issue. Screen time reduced significantly. There was no shortage of breaking news, though I remained mostly ignorant. Even at the end of the experiment, I was in no rush. 'So what?' was my response at every feed item. Getting unnecessary facts at the mind's whim has lost its allure to me. For now.
Logging of time spent has highlighted a problem. Focus. Enthusiasm faded after first few days when I realised where all the time was going. "Deep work" requires some time to warm up. Flow comes after an hour. That was what I was after. And that was exactly the thing lacking in my labour.
As I rightly feared, about 75% of that time was spent with other people. Looking over them or fighting daily fires. This is exactly the kind of work I wanted to avoid. Focus is really hard in an organisation. Weeks turn into months and nobody knows where it went.
One could argue this is work. This is what managers do. But it feels wasted time to me. Purpose of the business should be more than creating a job for the owner.
This calls for a monthly or quarterly objective, with weekly milestones. Not just plain objectives, but something that has never been done or attempted.
All work devolves into circling work unless consciously countered. How much leverage do you have? How much value are you creating? One should put up these questions to oneself from time to time.
